The first missed EMI is the cheapest one to recover

Every NPA starts as a single missed EMI. At that moment the borrower is usually reachable, the amount is small, and a reminder often resolves it. Ninety days later, the same account needs field visits, legal notices and write-off provisions.

Yet in many banks and NBFCs, early collections still run on spreadsheets. Tele-calling, field and legal teams use separate tools, and every handover is an email. Nobody has a single view of who owes what, in which bucket, or what was promised. Accounts slip into NPA not because nobody cared, but because nobody saw.

Modern collections fix this with structure. On ServiceNow, a missed EMI opens a case automatically. The DPD bucket sets the strategy: reminders at 0–29 days, systematic follow-up at 30–59, stronger recovery at 60–89, and legal escalation at 90+. Every promise-to-pay is tracked, and a broken promise triggers action the next day. Field agents visit with a mobile app that records geo check-in, photos and new promises. When an account crosses 90 DPD, it is flagged overnight and a legal case is created with the full history attached.

Compliance becomes a by-product, not an afterthought. A grievance pauses ageing and all collection activity. Visit hours and no-coercion rules are enforced on every visit. Every contact is time-stamped and audit-ready.

Industry benchmarks for modern collections point to 20–25% fewer non-performing loans, 15%+ lower collection costs and 20% higher cash collections. The lesson is simple: the earlier and more consistently you act, the less you lose.
